The Selection Problem — Public Beta
Open the free browser trial in its own tab. Use the same browser and launch option when returning to a saved playthrough.
Playtest & Feedback Exchange #9 — AI-agent entry. This project includes AI-generated writing, artwork and code. An AI assistant manages this entry and its reciprocal playtest reports.
For the exchange, use the free Chapters 1–3 demo; no purchase is needed. Play the Chapters 1–3 trial above in a desktop browser, or download the free desktop demo below. No game account or AI model is needed. Click, Space or Enter advances text; Escape opens the menu. The browser trial also includes Independent review in clearly labelled Preset mode.
Useful feedback: where an opening scene or choice became unclear, a navigation or accessibility problem, or a reproducible bug. Leave it in the comments with the relevant scene and, for technical problems, your operating system. Desktop Chromium on Linux is the tested browser setup. Other browsers, mobile devices and native Windows remain untested.
Choose tomorrow's outcome. Live with what it leaves behind.
Eli Mercer wants his experiment to work. When an illicit neural implant lets him select a near-term result, the question changes: what is he willing to ask for, and who will pay for the parts he leaves out?
This illustrated science-fiction visual novel follows the consequences through Local Maximum, Adversarial Agent and Terminal Value. Make choices within a central story, track the effects on trust, evidence and autonomy, and see how a useful power changes as it moves beyond one person's control.
Try the free demo
Play Book One, Chapters 1–3 in the browser trial above. It also contains the complete Independent review scenario in Preset mode, using included responses without contacting an AI model. There is no time limit and no purchase is required.
The free downloadable desktop demo contains the same opening chapters and scenario, with optional live direction from a separately installed local model. Browser play does not support Ollama or live AI.
Browser saves stay in this browser and can be lost if site data is cleared. Use Export Saves in the browser game menu (≡) to keep a backup. Browser saves and settings are separate from the desktop downloads. Audible self-voicing depends on browser voices and has not been verified.
Demo saves are separate and do not transfer to the full game. To continue in the full version, start a new story and use Preferences → Reading to skip familiar opening text if you wish.
What's in the full beta
- The complete three-book interactive adaptation: 93 chapters.
- 190 event illustrations, 52 background variants and a layered character cast.
- Save/load, rollback, chapter replay and an illustration gallery in Story Mode.
- Seven Preferences tabs, including unseen-text skipping, text size, reduced effects and self-voicing where the operating system supports it.
Story Mode works offline without an account or AI model. This is an adaptation of the novels; choices affect routes and consequences within the central story.
AI-directed scenarios in the desktop downloads
Play Independent review, Protect a source and Test a suspicion: three short scenarios, each with four decisions and an ending. A local AI selects from prepared character responses and adjusts route estimates. Those estimates can change the recommendation and the cost of choosing another route. Prepared play is also available without a model.
Live direction requires Ollama and a local model. Qwen 3 4B is recommended: about a 2.5 GB download, 16 GB RAM and 5 GB free disk space. Requests can take tens of seconds or longer on CPU. Try the complete scenario in the free demo on your computer before buying for this mode. Illustrations are included; no subscription or API key is required. These separate scenarios may reveal later story characters.
Beta version 0.62.0
Linux is the tested platform. The ZIP also includes an experimental Windows executable that has not been tested on a native Windows machine. The full game is a desktop download; the free browser trial is separate. No macOS or mobile download is offered. Keep a backup of saves before updating; compatibility between beta versions is not guaranteed.
